How to Store Homemade Baked Goods. Essential Tips

When home baked goods are stored properly, we can enjoy them for much longer. Each type of baked goods – muffins, cakes, rolls, etc. – has its own set of storage rules.
Let’s take a closer look at all the details and features.

1. Muffins, bundt cakes and pound cakes.

If there are no fresh fruits or berries added to the muffin bundt cake, it can be stored at room temperature in a tightly closed container or wrapped in plastic film or a bag. Such baked goods can be stored for about a week.

Muffins with berries and fruit are better stored in the refrigerator – still in the same container or film, but for a maximum of 3-4 days.

2. Cookies.

The storage method depends on the type of cookie. Soft cookies such as madeleines or financiers can be stored in the same way as muffins.

Other types of cookies can be stored at room temperature even without packaging. The term – up to a month. But in order to keep dust and other unwanted objects out of it, it is better to cover the cookies with a lid – i.e. to store it in a jar or container.

3. Pies, coffee cakes, tarts, quiches.

These types of baked goods, both sweet and savory, should be stored in the refrigerator in a tightly closed container for 3-4 days.

4. Bread, buns and bread rolls.

In a city apartment with dry air, it is better to store such baked goods wrapped in a plastic bag. As a rule, homemade yeast baked goods keep fresh for about 2 days.

5. Cakes, cheesecakes, eclairs and other cream-filled pastries.

The storage concept and terms here are the same as for pies with fillings – that is, in fact and by experience, at a temperature of 2-6 °C most layer cakes and cheesecakes can be stored up to 3-5 days. But for the most cautious of my readers, I will give the conditions for storing cakes with different types of frosting:

  • Without any frosting, with meringue-based cream, fruit and berry fillings, popcakes – 3 days.
  • With pastry cream and butter cream – 2-3 days.
  • Whipped cream, cottage cheese or ricotta fillings – 1-2 days.
  • Cheesecakes – up to 5 days.

How to extend the shelf life of baked goods?

If you have realized that you will not have time to eat everything you baked, there is another storage option – freezing. This method is suitable for muffins, cakes without frosting, many pies, rolls and bread.

Before freezing, wrap the baked goods tightly in several layers of plastic wrap and place them in the freezer. Defrost the baked goods on the bottom shelf of the refrigerator. Then reheat in the oven at 200 °C (390 °F) for about 5 minutes.

How to give stale bread a second life?

On the third day of yeast rolls, it is usually difficult to eat them with pleasure because they inevitably become stale. To revive them, spray them well with water from a spray gun and put them in an oven heated to 200 °C (390 °F) with the fan off for 5-7 minutes.

The rolls will be crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. However, it is better to eat them immediately, within half an hour after heating.
